The following guide will equip you with a basic understanding of how to create a city tour.

General information about the tour

A city tour is intended to acquaint tourists with the local sites. Generally, these tours contain a number of tourist attractions 1, a route 2 and navigational stories 3. The tour is based on points of interest. The tourists choose particular tours precisely because they wish to see the points of interest. The route is the optimal path to take to view each of the attractions on the tour. The navigational stories are helpful elements (usually in the form of audio hints) that ensure that the tourists do not get lost along the way.

One more important element – the “Trigger-Zone” 4. When the tourists cross this virtual boundary, they enter the active field of either the point of interest or the navigation history. As soon as the tourists cross into the point of interest’s trigger zone, the story about that point of interest will start playing automatically. The navigational story will work in exactly the same way. As soon as the tourists cross into the navigation history’s trigger zone, they will immediately receive a hint about where to go next.

Let’s create a short tour similar to that shown in the above image and check how it works on the mobile audio guide.

To create the tour, we will need several photograps and audio stories. When preparing these, we recommend that you use the standard formats. For the photographs, use jpegs, for the audio, use mp3s. You can choose photographs from the existing collection; audio narratives can be recorded using either the notebook’s internal microphone or the PC’s external microphone. The audio story can be recorded on a cell phone, and the file can be transferred to the computer.
