About the museum

The Enrico De Cillia Modern Art Gallery is, for the Carnia area, one of the most significant museums from an artistic point of view. It was officially born on 21 September 1975 thanks to the donation of fifty works of art offered to the Municipality by the great Carnic artist; this first historical nucleus of paintings is representative of the most important and illustrious names of the Friulian artistic world of the last century. Enrico De Cillia, a well-known painter as well as an expert art collector, made this decision with the aim of providing his hometown with a heritage that stimulates culture and love for art, especially among young people. In the following years, De Cillia further enriched the collection with new works, defining the exhibition heritage with the addition of drawings, prints and sculptures, until reaching the number of over seventy items. Among these, an important place is occupied by a series of oils, created by the artist himself, particularly linked to the memories and suggestions of his land. The collection, initially housed in the Town Hall and then, from September 1987, in the two rooms on the ground floor of the nineteenth-century building located next to the Town Hall, consolidates with the contributions that artists and individuals want to offer to further qualify it. In this regard, Giorgio De Cillia should be remembered who, taking over from his father's will, donated to the Municipality fifty nude drawings, the work of the renowned and famous master Edouard Pignon, as well as four recent works by his father and 1300 art books, precious bibliographic support and often rare that allows you to broaden your knowledge through appropriate insights. The last acquisition, in chronological order, is the one wanted by the Municipal Administration in the first months of 1997, relating to a group of over twenty-six oils by the master Enrico De Cillia; thus, within the overall heritage of the museum, an anthological nucleus of significant importance is established for understanding the complex and fascinating personality of the artist to whom the Gallery is entitled. Therefore, important testimonies relating to national and foreign art have been added to the Friulian artistic panorama, which present the museum as a high-level exhibition itinerary.

Marini, Sironi, Someda, Zigaina, Filipponi, Anzil Toffolo, Coceani, Ursella, Pellis, Marra, Altieri, Sopracasa, Marangoni, Sassu, Cussigh, Bront, Davanzo, Pittino, Celiberti, Supan, are just some of the names of the artists who make up the heritage of the Gallery.
Over the years then, the architectural structure of the museum has undergone a substantial and important expansion and restructuring project which considerably increases the exhibition spaces, offering itself to the public in a new guise. In the meantime, the Administration began the long and complex bureaucratic process to obtain museum recognition from the Region and obtained it in June 2003, the month in which the current site was inaugurated, specially designed to accommodate its new museum functions. The De Cillia Modern Art Gallery, peripheral and marginal by fate of geographical position, despite the objective management difficulties, proposes its voice with will and energy and claims its life-giving and stimulating role for the territory.
