The archaeological section

The renewed archaeological section includes finds that belong to a long period between Prehistory and the Middle Ages. The exhibition itinerary opens with prehistoric and protohistoric finds from the caves of the province of Trapani and continues with the Greek artefacts from the necropolis and sanctuary of the Malophoros of Selinunte. In the large central room, covered by a large dome that evokes the "sacred mountain" of Erice, important finds from the Erice area are displayed, together with artefacts of Phoenician-Punic culture found in Mozia, Birgi, Lilibeo. In the center of the room, some Greek and Roman transport amphorae are displayed, together with the bronze rostrum of a Roman ship, with the characteristic "trident" shape, dating back to the naval battle fought in 241 BC. C. off the island of Levanzo, which put an end to the First Punic War. The collection of figured pottery is particularly significant, including both examples of Attic black-figure pottery and Attic red-figure pottery, including the bell krater with a Dionysian scene dating back to the 4th century BC. C. and the columned krater from Camarina, a fine example of Apulian ceramics from the 4th century BC. C.
