Die intensivste Phase des Tunnelbaus in der Geschichte Gibraltars fand während des Zweiten Weltkriegs statt, als das Gebiet eine wichtige Rolle im Nordatlantik und im Mittelmeer spielte. Die Gesamtlänge der Tunnel wuchs während des Krieges stark an, von 11 auf 40 Kilometer.
