Les premières générations d’immigrés
Entre 1870 et 1910, des chantiers gigantesques voient le jour à Bruxelles pour modeler une ville bourgeoise. Les expropriations chassent de nombreux habitants vers la périphérie; en particulier, vers Cureghem et Molenbeek. En même temps, l’industrie attire les habitants des campagnes. Touchée par des famines et le chômage, l’immigration de l’ouest de la Flandre sera importante.
