Tur audio 5. Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse, one of the most prominent and important figures in 20th century world art, was the head of the fauvist group. The Museum is proud to exhibit a collection of his works.

Henri Matisse was born in 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis. After graduating from the lyceum, he worked as an assistant attorney. The future artist came to Paris to study law, but he did not become a lawyer. In 1890, Matisse started to study art. After visiting a number of studios (including the studio of Bouguereau, an official academic painter), he came to Gustave Moreau’s studio at the École des Beaux-Arts. Moreau was a symbolist artist, the author of many works on allegorical and mythological themes, and one of the most interesting colorists in French painting. Marquet, Rouault, Manguin, Friesz, and Derain, who later became the core of the fauvist group, studied together with Matisse. Being respectful of his students’ individuality, Gustave Moreau recognized a future transformer of fine arts in Matisse. “You will simplify painting”, Moreau said prophetically. On the advice of his teacher, Matisse visited the Louvre in 1892–1900 to copy paintings by Poussin, Rafael, Annibale Carracci, and Dutch masters of the 17th century.
