The confraternities that arose for corporate purposes brought together those who practiced the same art or trade. Each brotherhood was a body of power that actively participated in the administration of public goods with specific tasks and privileges bestowed generously by kings and popes.

The eldest was elected at the head of each brotherhood with the office of Rector and was part of the Civic Senate by right. During the Risorgimento many confraternities actively took sides, so much so that some of them became secret sects under the guise of religious meetings.

With the unification of Italy, and the suppression of many religious institutions, they no longer had any official status or sustenance or privilege and were transformed into exclusively religious institutions.

With the Lateran Pacts of 1929, their juridical status and the obligation to obtain a statute and to depend on the diocese to which they belong were recognized.
