About the museum

The Archaeological Collection present at the Sergio Fontana Study and Research Center represents an experimental example in Puglia of the approach and valorization of Art, within a place of work and scientific research. This does not happen exclusively for philanthropic reasons, but to guarantee a stimulating and rewarding working environment for those who work or train in the Centre.

In itself, the building in which the Study Center is located is an extraordinary example of valorisation of an ancient wine-oil factory, the oldest part of which dates back to the end of the 18th century and which was joined by a structure from the early years of the twentieth century, belonged to the Lembo family of local agricultural entrepreneurs who, in addition to producing oils and wines, also produced spirits and alcohol.

The collection consists of valuable examples of ceramic art from Canosa, dating from the 7th century BC. to the imperial Roman period, also including a numismatic collection (Turchiarelli). The entire collection, known to the Superintendence, is constantly enhanced and displayed in the entrance hall of the Study Centre, a place also designated for the training of young students in pharmaceutical techniques.
