INTRODUCTION
Dear visitor, we are pleased to have you here at the Archaeological Museum of Venafro, that once was the splendid monastery of Santa Chiara, completed in 1654 thanks to the donation of a nobleman from Venafro.
The museum exhibition is hosted on two floors according to chronological and thematic criteria: the ground floor hosts finds coming from the Samnite necropolis of Pozzilli, from the pre-imperial Roman city of Venafro and from the big public buildings located there; the first floor, on the other hand, exhibits materials recovered from excavations in the urban area that have allowed us to reconstruct various aspects of everyday life in Roman times. The museum exhibition continues with a chess set which dates back to the Arab occupation and with the most significant evidence of the early medieval abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno.
At the entrance to the museum something will catch your eye: on the left is a circular moving structure, made of wood, on which mothers would leave newborns that they couldn’t raise.
