The City of Arts and Sciences deserves at least half a day to explore and is best seen during both the day and at night as your visual perspectives change completely. As a result we are including two sets of directions.
If you prefer to dedicate a good part of the day to The City of Arts and Sciences, and are staying in a hotel or hostal in Old Town Valencia, the easiest way to get there is to walk east to the Turia Gardens and then turn south. The first part of the City you’ll see is The Príncipe Felipe Science Museum; the rest of the complex is just a bit further south.
If you prefer to save Plaza del Toros for another day and visit the City of Arts and Sciences after the Museum of Fine Arts take a leisurely stroll south from the Museum through the Turia Gardens. Once again,The Príncipe Felipe Science Museum will be the first part of the complex with the other buildings being a bit further south.
Created to focus on the interactive participation of all visitors, Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias or the City of Arts and Sciences, has become synonymous with Valencia in the minds of the world. Visitors can happily spend a few hours - or a few days - exploring and experiencing all that is on tap.
Designed by two world renowned architects – Valencia’s native born son, Santiago Calatrava and the Spanish–Mexican, Félix Candela, the City of Arts and Sciences is a cluster of stunning futuristic buildings and one of the largest scientific and cultural complexes in Europe. Located along a two kilometer area on the old Turia River bed, the complex is made up of six large buildings each more than worthy of a visit.
Calatrava designed the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía (Opera House), the Hemisfèric (IMAX and Full Dome), the Science Museum Príncipe Felipe, the Umbracle, (Promenade and Car Park), and the Agora (conference center). Candela designed the Oceanográfico (Aquarium) with its striking and often photographed multiple roofs.
The Príncipe Felipe Science Museum, created with the objective of stimulating curiosity and a love for the scientific, has become a world reference point for the interactive science.
The Oceanogràfic is the largest aquarium in Europe and showcases all the world’s main marine ecosystems. Each of its buildings is identified with a specific aquatic environment: the Mediterranean; Wetlands; Temperate and Tropical Seas; Oceans; Antarctic and Arctic, Islands and the Red Sea. Make sure to visit Dolphinarium – it offers a unique experience in every sense of the word.
