Hastings Garden
Welcome! We are now standing in Hastings Gardens.
Those gardens are built upon St Michael’s Bastion, on the west of the city gate. As you can see, from here you have great views of both Floriana, Sliema, Msida as well as Manoel Island and the Marsamxett Harbor.
The name of the garden dates back to the early 19th century when Francis, the Marquis of Hastings, was the British governor of Malta. As Lord Hastings died at sea in 1827 he was buried in the garden where we can also find a monument dedicated to him by the Hastings Family.
Ever since, this place has been a quiet haven in the midst of the busy heart of Valletta, and offers a moment of peace and relaxation to all its visitors. Despite its relatively small size, it offers many picturesque little corners perfect for taking photos or just enjoy as they are. Let´s take a stroll around and see if we can find any nice settings for the photo album!
As for who constructed the gardens, Adriano DeVina is the only name ever known of an architect that had anything to do with it. Maltese legend has it that these gardens took only four hours to be constructed, which of course, seems fairly unlikely to be exactly true. What is though a fact, is that the Maltese people have always been famous for being hard workers, hence the legend about this place.
