This church is part of an important monastic complex that belonged to the Benedictine order; it is one of the most important in Naples and it includes two churches and four cloisters It has been home to the State Archives since 1835.
Giovanni Donadio, an architect from Calabria nicknamed Mormando, started the construction of the church in 1494; he followed the project according to the will of king Alfonso d'Aragona II, who contributed with 15,000 ducats; huge amounts of money from the Mormiles disappointed the Benedictines. The works continued until 1570.
