The light yellow pavilion with a four-columned portico, with the entrance protected by two lionesses, – is the only building which has survived from the palace of emperor Alexander 1st, it was constructed in 1825.
In childhood the future emperor Alexander 1st liked to stay in Kolomenskoe with his grandmother Ekaterina. But when he has ascended to the throne, the palace was dilapidated. And finally it was destroyed by the French in 1812. And then Alexander decided to construct a new palace in Kolomenskoe.
Alexander’s palace was designed by the architect Evgraf Tyurin. According to his plan the palace should become a monument to Russia’s victory in the war with Napoleon. Hence the style – the empire style. Wide stairs with terraces led from the strict-majestic building with the high tower to the river. And on the opposite bank Tyurin placed a wooden bridge.
Building of the palace stopped in 1825. However Alexander 1st did not have time to accept the finished palace. On November, 19th of the same year the emperor mysteriously died suddenly in Taganrog. The next Tsar – Nikolai 1st did not like Kolomenskoe and the palace soon became dilapidated and was dismantled.
The surviving Alexandrovsky palace was most likely, planned to be used as a tea lodge or a private theatre. But emperor Nikolai 1st built the Moscow military school infirmary.
From the beginning of the 20th Century doctors from the Kolomenskoe hospital lived in the pavillon. Nowadays there are exhibitions and concerts in here. And recently also weddings.
