The fountain in the center of the square is one of the three famous monuments of Augsburg. This one in Rathausplatz is called Augustus Fountain, after Emperor Augustus. The fountain was installed in 1594 and took six years to make. The sculptor, Hubert Gerard, used a combination of bronze and marble to give the monument its signature look.
The statue on the top shows Emperor Augustus addressing his army. He is shown wearing a wreath symbolizing glory, honor and peace. On his clothes, there are multiple engravings symbolizing strength, decisiveness and bravery. The engraving at the feet of the statue is Augsburg’s coat of arms. Over the years, several inscriptions were added to the fountain. They pay tribute to the important people that contributed to the city’s well-being and describe details of the restoration work done on the fountain since 1672.
Interestingly, the metal grill surrounding the fountain is actually thirty years older than the fountain itself. The grill was crafted by the famous blacksmith, Georg Scheff, in 1564. While the grill has successfully withstood the elements of nature, the bronze used for the fountain itself began corroding in various places. Many of the current figures on display are replicas of the originals. The original items are on display at the Maximilian Museum.
Please now proceed towards the Town Hall. This is the large building in front of you with the two onion shaped domes.
