Tavel House is an amazing building. It is the oldest preserved medieval residential building in Geneva. In the mid-14th century, the wall was destroyed by a great fire. The owners, wealthy aristocrats named Tavel, restored the building, making it resemble in appearance the castle and city palace at the same time. In the following centuries, the house had different owners. It was only in the mid-20th century that it became the property of the city and was restored. Now, the town museum is located here.
Today, it houses a museum about the city’s history, but is not about kings and battles – rather, the daily life of the citizens over the centuries. The exhibition features original things that people have enjoyed over the years, such as furniture, crockery, old photos and amazing handmade toys.
The greatest pride of the museum is considered the plan of Geneva from 1850, which was created by an architect over 18 years.
One look at the plan and you can easily imagine what the city looked like at that time.
Be sure to go to the museum to learn about the history of Geneva in detail.
