Chifte Hamam
The Chifte Hamam is a double reward for visitors. Not only is it a great example of architecture from the Ottoman empire it is also one of the main art galleries in Skopje as it houses part of the National Gallery collection.
The Hamam itself was built in the 1500s and served as a double baths for both men and women which is where the word Chifte comes from. Today the hamam is not operational but you are still able to explore the grounds and see the old stone work of the Hamam itself and see where Skopje citizens would have bathed and relaxed years ago.
The Hamam building is very atmospheric with many domed ceilings and decorated walls and is the perfect place for a gallery.
The exhibitions on show are from a range of modern Macedonian art and also classic art including religious iconography. The number of different types of art on display is impressive there are often many installation pieces on offer that blend modern art with the backdrop of the old Hamam interior. There are often exhibitions of work from other countries too, so it is recommended to check what is showing when you are there.
Once you have finished exploring the Cifte Hamam the best way out of the Old Bazaar area and to reach our next destination is to head back towards the Fortress and Samoilova Street. Once there follow Samoilova Street south east towards the river and you will reach the National Theatre.
