Ellington Residences: 1206 & 1212 T Street, NW
Location: 1206 T St. & 1212 T St. NW
In March 1919, Ellington and his young family rented a room at 1206 T Street, NW. The townhouse sold for more than $1 million in 2010. Now, let’s walk down to a few doors from here, where around 1919 or 1920, Duke's parents lived at 1212 T Street, Northwest and this was also his Washington address in 1923. One of the Ellington’s neighbors was Jesse H. Mitchell who would later become the founder of the black community’s financial institution, Industrial Bank at the corner of 11th and U Streets, Northwest in August,1934.
Hipsters, our final two destinations are located on the upper northwest side of town. They are very important civic and culture landmarks in our city that honor and celebrate our native son for generations to come.
