Right in front of you, at the end of the Union Boulevard, the Palace of the Parliament can be seen, better known as the "People's House" or the "House of the Republic”, name bore before the 1989 Revolution.
Due to its huge dimensions, the "People's House" was included into the Guiness Book of World Records at several categories:
- the second largest administrative building in the world after the Pentagon;
- the heaviest building in the world counting 1 million cubic meters of marble 700000 tons of steel and 3500 tons of bronze and crystal
- the most expensive administrative building. The costs of the building, in 1989, were estimated to U.S. $ 1.75 billion and to EURO 3 billion in 2006.
It is also the 3rd building in the world in terms of volume. It exceeds by 2% the volume of the Cheops pyramid from Egypt.
The building measures 270 meters by 240 meters, 86 meters height, and 92 meters below the ground. It has 9 levels at the surface and other 9 underground. It features approximately 1,000 rooms, of which 440 offices, over 30 halls and saloons, restaurants, libraries, and even a concert hall. There are rumors talking about the existence of an anti-atomic bunker.
The People's House construction began in 1984, as part of the Nicolae Ceausescu's megalomaniac project of Bucharest "reconstruction", who wanted to make a replica of the Phenian city in North Korea. 700 architects were involved into the People's House construction and approximately 20000 people worked in three shifts, 24 hours a day. It was build only from Romanian materials.
Currently, the Palace of Parliament houses the two chambers of the Romanian Parliament, the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the headquarters of several International Organizations.
The palace is open to visitors and offers touring programs in several international languages.
