Mercat de Sant Antoni
Welcome to San Antoni market!
This is one of the largest markets in Barcelona, and the first of its kind to be built. Look how nice it is now that they have remodeled and reopened it!
Compared to the more famous market; La Boqueria on Ramblas, San Antoni market is much larger and less touristy. This is the place where people who live in this neighborhood come, just like their ancestors used to come here for more than 130 years, to buy fruit, vegetables, meat and fish. Let’s enter this market, its iron structure shaped like a Greek cross, which basically occupies the entire block.
As you can see, today you can find more than just food here. Look, there are stalls with clothes and accessories, and further back in the market hall, there are people selling stamps, books, magazines and collectible coins. The market life has changed little, so the kids get to experience Spanish day-to-day life, as it was when their grandparents were their age. Let the young ones use all their senses in this world of bright colors and interesting smells and flavors. It is an ideal place to learn and try new things with all the natural beauty found in the market place. Look over there, at the dried, decorative chilies hanging from a string for example! Buy strawberries, custard, cheese, bread and ham to make a picnic afterwards. Let the kids taste and choose olives and dried fruits and nuts for dessert. If you are in urgent need of something to eat, another option is to go to one of the bars or cafes inside the market, where you can have a snack or coffee and juice with pastries. When you have finished shopping it’s time to go to the next stop on this route.
