Two canons guard the entrance of the Dutch Fortress Museum, which has a refined Bastion turf gateway. This bastion was built after 1679 and is one of the six bastions that make up the Naarden Fortress.
In the Fortress Museum you can learn all about the rich history of Naarden, living in a garrison town and the history of Dutch fortification. Wander the ramparts or lose yourself in the underground casemates and mysterious whisper tunnels into another era.
The sixty-meter long whisper tunnel was once guarded at night by sentries. They kept their ears strained for telltale noises like squeaking oars and sloshing water when the enemy would attempt secretly crossing the canal by boat. Thanks to the cast iron sleeves along the roof of the whisper tunnels, these sounds were collected and amplified. It was almost impossible for the enemy to sneak across the canal by boat.
