Per più di quattro secoli, Palazzo Grimani ha ospitato le collezioni di famiglia, non solo quelle più note di antichità, ma dipinti dei più eccellenti pennelli, libri rari e preziosi, mobili raffinati, e oggetti eccentrici tratti dalle meraviglie del mondo naturale.

La mostra A Cabinet of Wonders si sviluppa in due sezioni distinte ma intrecciate, ognuna delle quali è un omaggio alla pratica del collezionismo e al fascino duraturo della meraviglia.

Nella prima sezione, le stanze mitologiche di Palazzo Grimani evocano lo spirito delle Wunderkammern, i camerini delle curiosità che fiorirono tra XVI e XVII secolo. Tali intimi santuari furono concepiti per avvolgere l'appassionato collezionista in un mondo di meraviglie, un arazzo di tesori tratti da ogni angolo del regno naturale e soprannaturale: Naturalia et Mirabilia. Si credeva infatti che alcune “cose mirabili” potessero essere dotate di poteri magici e taumaturgici.

La sezione  richiama dunque gli ambienti dove i collezionisti concentravano i loro tesori, spesso con poco riguardo per l’ordinamento degli oggetti e combinando manufatti appartenenti a tipologie, provenienze e cronologie anche molto diverse tra loro, in un insieme eclettico e stupefacente.

In mostra abbiamo ricreato meticolosamente questi spazi incantati, pieni di meraviglie, in sintonia con i soffitti riccamente decorati del Palazzo.

For more than four centuries, Palazzo Grimani was home to the family's treasures, a repository not only of the renowed antiquities, but also for masterpieces by illustrious painters, rare and precious books, exquisite furnishings, and curious objects drawn from the wonders of the natural world.

The exhibition A Cabinet of Wonders unfolds in two distinct yet interwoven chapters, each a homage to the art of collecting and the enduring allure of wonder.

In the first chapter, the ‘Mythological Rooms’ evoke the spirit of the Wunderkammern—the Cabinets of Curiosity that flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries. These intimate sanctuaries were designed to envelop the passionate collector in a world of marvels, a tapestry of treasures drawn from every corner of the natural and supernatural realms: Naturalia et Mirabilia. Indeed, it was once believed that certain extraordinary objects possessed magical or even thaumaturgic powers. This chapter evokes the rooms where collectors gathered their treasures, often with little regard for order, mingling artifacts of vastly different origins, types, and chronologies into an eclectic and wondrous display.

Here, we have meticulously reimagined these enchanted spaces, brimming with wonders and in perfectly attuned to the opulent, richly adorned ceilings of the Palace.
