About the museum
Hello, today we invite you to visit one of the most interesting attractions in the resort town of Baden-Baden, namely the Casino. Film star Marlene Dietrich called him “the most beautiful in the world.” Today it is one of the oldest gambling establishments in Germany and, of course, the most famous. However, it all started small.
The predecessors of this establishment were several “gaming houses” that existed since the beginning of the 19th century in different parts of the city and were available to players of all classes. In 1821, the city authorities decided to create a new cultural and gaming complex. And in the period from 1821 to 1823. the architect from Karlsruhe Friedrich Weinbrenne designed a palace in the spirit of classicism - today's Kurhaus. With its eight Corinthian columns it has become the symbol of Baden-Baden. The new establishment was leased by French entrepreneur and impresario Antonio Chabert. The casino became a cultural center on a European scale; high-ranking public began to visit it, but access was closed to commoners. The interior of the establishment was replete with gold decor, velvet and crystal. However, the main figure in the gaming business in Baden-Baden was not Chabert, but Jacques Benazier, who became a co-owner of the casino in 1838. Under him, the interiors of the gaming rooms changed. New roads were built to the Kurhaus, famous cultural figures came to the casino, and its own orchestra appeared there. Benazier dies in 1848, and his business is continued by the son of the tenant, Edouard Oscar Benazier. And now everyone associates the gambling business in Baden-Baden with the name Benazier, and they remember about Chabert that he introduced the custom of drinking coffee at noon in Baden-Baden. The following years saw periods of rise and fall in the casino's popularity, closing completely in 1872 during the reign of Bismarck and reopening in 1933 after a 61-year hiatus. In 1944, the casino closed again for 6 years and opened again in 1950. We invite you to take a closer look at this iconic establishment of the city.
