Heilig-Geist-Kirche
As you walk toward Heilig-Geist-Kirche, you are approaching Munich’s oldest church. Back in the 13th century, a medieval chapel and sanatorium existed here. The current Gothic style building was constructed when the previous building was completely destroyed in a fire in 1327.
Heilig-Geist-Kirche itself underwent a number of renovations over the years. The first major remodeling was done in 1724 by architect Johann Georg Ettenhofer. During this remodeling, much of the church’s interior was lavishly decorated in Baroque style. Heavy frescoed ceilings were added and the walls were livened up with stucco decorations.
Despite a strong return to Gothic styles, the interior of the church still contains strong themes from its Baroque past. The High Altar in particular is beautifully decorated with paintings and sculptures. However, the current version of the altar is a reconstruction of the original work by Nikolaus Stuber and Antonio Matteo. A second altar with an old wooden sculpture is also still present in really good condition. Seeing the work on both simultaneously gives a sense of how craftsmanship evolved in Bavaria as it entered Reconnaissance.
