Audio tour 6. The low peat lands

Nowhere else can the influence of man be seen so well as in the peat lands of Friesland. This was once an immense peat mound, about 6 metres high. Excavation and draining by farmers caused the peat to subside, or sink into the ground. This process even created lakes in the lowest areas.
