Bolshaya Sadovaya Street starts in the very first historic core of Rostov-on-Don. Here, in the mid-18th century the Temernitskaya Customs House was established. Next to the building of the Vecherniy Rostov (Evening Rostov) city newspaper, the memorial sign is installed which memorial plate reads “On December 15, 1749, the Temernitskaya Customs House was established that laid the foundation for the city of Rostov-on-Don”. The mock-up of a frigate is mounted on the high arch in commemoration of Peter I’s Azov campaigns in 1695-1696. The story goes that this is the place where he planted an oak and paid attention to the spring with good drinking water situated just above the Temernik estuary up the river Don that he called “Krasniy Kolodets” (Red Well).
