About the museum

The Horniman Museum and Gardens was opened in 1901 by Frederick John Horniman to display his extraordinary collection of objects to visitors. Since then, the collection has grown tenfold and now includes internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as an acclaimed aquarium and natural history collection.

Unusually for such an important museum, you can see the collection up-close and face-to-face. You can even pick up, try on and play with some of the objects.

Visitors come time and again to explore the free museum, take part in exhibitions, events and activities and enjoy the 16-acre gardens with stunning views over London.

What's new

Our new exhibition, Dinosaurs: Monster Families, open until 30th October 2016, reveals the fascinating family life of dinosaurs through interactive exhibits, authentic specimens from around the world and life-size models.

This is such a fantastic museum for a family outing. It is well-worth the visit. The gardens are also wonderful to visit during all seasons of the year.
