The three-span road bridge with a colonnade by Smolenskaya Embankment is called Borodino Bridge.
The bridge was built in 1968 and was originally named 'Dorogomilovsky'. Once there was just a passage boat, then came the so-called 'living' bridge, lying directly on the water. The road to Smolensk, Lithuania and Poland began from there. A wooden triumphal arch was even constructed here at the beginning of the 17th century, the first known in Moscow's history.
The triumphal arch was built in honour of the famous political adventurer Marina Mniszech. For some ten years during the Time of Troubles, this lady managed to remain in the role of the Russian Tsarina, as she was the wife of the First False Dmitry, and then the Second False Dmitry (who claimed to be the first).
The next time the bridge played a role in history was in 1812, when first Russian soldiers crossed it from Borodino, and then Napoleon with his troops. Exactly one hundred years later, in commemoration of the anniversary of this landmark battle, the bridge was renamed Borodino.
