St Michael's Church is Roman Catholic church of Gent. It was commenced in mid-15th century and executed in then fashionable Gothic style. The church had undergone multiple reconstructions and style alterations.
The steeple of St Michael’s Church should have been the most prominent in the city, but history decided otherwise: the initially planned 134 metres of ‘monument of triumph’ never managed to be completed. And due to the lack of funding the spire has remained at paltry 24 metres.
In 1828, the unfinished tower finally acquired a closed roof. Once inside you can not avoid being stricken by the beautiful contrast of red bricks used for the ceiling and lime-stoned columns and vaults.
The church contains numerous paintings and sculptures by famous masters, including ‘Christ on the Cross’ by Anthony Van Dyck.
