About the museum

From Earth Sciences to Life Sciences. From the fundamental concepts of natural science to in-depth insights into major themes.  This is the pathway that distinguishes the Natural History Museum of Maremma, located in Grosseto’s historic centre, and inaugurated by Piero Angela in 2009.

The simplification of scientific contents, the multimedia and sensory elements, together with the exhibit layouts, render the museum an enjoyable as well as fully modern reality.

There are two main exhibition sectors: earth sciences (dedicated to minerals, rocks, fossils, and the geomorphological processes of the territory), and life sciences (dedicated to the principal ecological zones and related plant and animal species).  This latter sector includes the room of the waters (the seabed, shorelines, and coastal waterlands), and several other rooms, focused on the most important land-based biotic communities, from dunes to hillsides, from inland areas to mountain ranges.

The passage leading from this last-named room to the gallery that faces onto the Room of the Waters is devoted to caverns and bio-speleology.  The Citizen Science Corner completes the itinerary, with its focus on participatory science, a topic that characterises many activities offered by the museum.
