Van Cleef & Arpels’ Collection
This Hummingbird jewel symbolizes the “White Jewelry” so appreciated in the 1920’s. It is modeled on a bird in flight and set with rose-cut diamonds mounted on platinum. The tail of the bird was embelished with vivid plumage and adorned the hats or gowns of elegant ladies.
Since the 1920’s, winged creatures have never ceased to inspire Van Cleef & Arpels’ repertoire. Evoking exotics lands and legends, they open the doors to an imaginary world of beauty and harmony. Eagles, swallows, butterflies, dragonflies, seagulls, lovebirds, ladybugs, birds of paradise abound in the Maison’s œuvre.
Among them all, it is the graceful hummingbird which most epitomizes movement. In the kingdom of birds, he alone is able to hover at will; he can also fly backwards or vertically and maintain his position in mid-flight while drinking from flower blossoms.
