The war greatly changed the daily lives of the population within the interior. Political life gave way to war propaganda, the economy was subordinated to military needs, and shortages of food, raw materials and goods appeared. On May 23, 1915, war also began on Slovene territory, with the Italian attack on the Austro-Hungarian Empire along the Soča or Isonzo River. Soldiers from many European nations bled on the battlefield known as the Isonzo Front. Refugees driven from their homes by war filled the refugee camps in the interior of the monarchy.
