For fans of the hustle and bustle, a visit to the Besiktas fish market is a must. The market is found in a residential area its one of those places that’s off the tourist trail which it all the more appealing to the intrepid traveller. The market is open all day, so don’t worry about having to get up at the same time as the fishermen do!
You cant help but come away feeling really happy, its rare not to hear the fisherman singing about how fresh their catch is and the animated bartering of locals with the sellers.
The market had an overhaul back in 2008 and some believe that the current market is too modern for the surrounding architecture. However, the concrete and the over hanging light bulbs give the air a breath of fresh air and it seems to just fit. Judge it for yourself!
There are a number of excellent fish restaurants in the surrounding areas, so if you are just visiting for the day or as a tourist you don’t have access to a kitchen, you can still sample the best catch of the day. The market opens at 8am and closes at 9pm daily and as with all markets and bazaars in Istanbul, its best to go as early as possible not only to avoid the crowds but also to see the best catches of the day
