About the museum
The Ocean Museum Germany has been operating a natural history museum directly at the Darßer Ort lighthouse since 1991. The NATUREUM is located in the core zone of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park not far from Darßer Weststrand. This means that the NATUREUM is located in one of the most beautiful coastal regions in Germany due to its pristine nature.

On the museum complex, a building formerly used as a stable now houses three aquariums with around 20,000 liters of salt water, in which marine animals from the Baltic Sea live. The former lighthouse keeper's house houses three floors of exhibitions on the Darßer Ort natural area, the Baltic Sea coast and the associated coastal dynamics. The recreated scenario “Darßwald by night” shows visitors the crepuscular inhabitants of the forest at a glance. The amber cabinet was newly opened in June 2016 to mark 25 years of the NATUREUM, with interesting facts about the popular beach find. After the tour, you can visit the museum café at the lighthouse. It is attached to the NATUREUM and reserved for museum guests. There is also a play boat for children in the inner courtyard of the museum grounds.
Outside the NATUREUM there is a wetland biotope, a beach and dune garden and, on the way to the nearby Darßer Weststrand beach, a relief table that illustrates the theme of coastal dynamics.
