Welcome at Escher in Het Paleis. I’m Dunja Hak, curator at this wonderful place at the historic centre of The Hague. In this old palace of the late queen Emma we show the work of the famous Dutch graphical artist Maurits Cornelis Escher. Escher lived from 1898 to 1972 and fascinates up until this day because of the game he plays with perspective space and reality in his work.
We’ve got all the highlights from his oeuvre on show: his portraits, his take on nature. His spectacular landscapes. His mathematical figures and his tessellations. You can be amazed by his print Relativity within which Escher even seems to provoke gravity. What seems the top of the stairs for one person seems the backside for the other person.
And this vivid game with reality and gravity will subsequently spring to mind when you thereafter walk the royal staircase of the palace. Escher in the Palace is the perfect mix between old and new art and a homage to a grand graphical artist: Maurits Cornelis Escher.
