An Unending Shadow is an exhibition of artworks by prominent Australian mother and daughter artists, Ann and Sophie Cape. Together they have made a series of challenging new artworks exploring the phenomena of dementia and its impact within the community. Australia, like much of the developed world, has an ageing population and conditions like dementia and Alzheimer's disease are becoming more widespread but are still little talked about or discussed in public.
The exhibition An Unending Shadow examines the emotional and psychological 'spaces' that people with dementia inhabit, as well as those of their family, friends and loved ones. Together the artists shine a light on these health issues and bring them forward into the public domain to encourage dialogue about their broader impacts within society. An Unending Shadow is the first exhibition of its kind that Mosman Art Gallery has staged, but is one that we are sure will resonate with many people in the community.
The development of the exhibition has relied upon a number of people who should be thanked. Firstly the artists Ann and Sophie Cape for their willingness to take on such a personally demanding project. Thanks are due to Dr Felicity Fenner, Director of UNSW Galleries, UNSW Australia, for her scholarly catalogue essay examining the artists' individual approaches to the exhibition. The gallery would also like to thank Professor John R Hodges for his essay outlining the clinical facts of the condition, along with his colleagues Associate Professor Olivier Piguet and Cassandra Kaizik of 'Frontier' the Frontotemporal Research Group at Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) for their support. We also thank Alzheimer's Australia, the leading health advocacy group for their assistance in promoting the exhibition, in particular Sue Pieters-Hawke, the National Ambassador for Alzheimer's Australia for opening the exhibition.
