Wat Chalong – The Spiritual Soul of Phuket

If you're visiting Phuket for the first time and want more than just beaches and bars, Wat Chalong is the place to start. This isn’t just another pretty temple — it’s where you feel Thailand. The scent of incense, the soft chime of bells, and the calm, respectful silence make this one of the island’s most memorable cultural experiences.

A Temple with a Story

Known officially as Wat Chaiyathararam, Wat Chalong is the most revered Buddhist temple on the island. It's been a spiritual center for locals since the early 19th century and was granted royal temple status in 1846.

Much of its fame is linked to Luang Pho Cham, a legendary monk known for his healing skills and wise leadership. People came from all over to see him — not just for advice, but for real help. He was a bone-setter, herbalist, and even helped calm a rebellion. Today, locals still come to pray to him for health and guidance.

What to See

The Grand Pagoda (Phra Mahathat Chedi)

The temple's highlight is a towering pagoda nearly 60 meters high, built between 1999 and 2001. Inside, it holds a rare and sacred relic — a fragment of Buddha’s bone, gifted from Sri Lanka. Climb to the top floor for a peaceful panoramic view over southern Phuket.

The Hall of Healer Monks

This unique cross-shaped hall contains lifelike wax figures of three monks, including Luang Pho Cham. All were famed for their healing skills, and the craftsmanship here is so detailed, you'll feel like they’re watching you. It's a peaceful and deeply moving spot.

The Lucky Elephant

Just outside the hall stands a statue of an elephant. Local tradition says that rubbing its belly brings good luck — so go ahead and give it a try.

The Ordination Hall (Ubosot)

This is the most sacred part of the complex, where monks gather for important rituals. While it’s not always open to the public, visitors can admire its architecture and respectful atmosphere from outside.

Luang Pho Cham’s House

A modest wooden structure reconstructed from old photos, this was once the monk’s personal residence. Inside, you’ll see his staff and personal belongings — a touching reminder of his real-life presence in the temple.

Traditions and Local Customs

You might hear the sudden bang of firecrackers — don’t be alarmed! It’s a traditional way of thanking the spirits for answered prayers and scaring away bad luck. The temple even has a special tower just for them.

Festivals are also a big part of temple life, especially in February, when Wat Chalong hosts a vibrant fair. Expect street food, stalls, music, and crowds of both locals and curious visitors.
