Uzès is known for the quality of its architecture as well as for its monuments. The town is labelled "Ville et Pays d'Art et d'Histoire" for its medieval and renaissance heritage. In 1962, the "Malraux" directives on patrimony allows for the protection and improvement of its historical and esthetic value. The heart of Uzès is the best testimony to these efforts of restauration.

First occupied by the Romans, Uzès becomes, in the fifth century, a powerful episcopal place to then become in 1632 the first Bishopric of France. It is magical to stroll throughout the narrow streets and discover gardens, fountains, impressive private mansions, and come across 4 of the most symbolic towers: Fenestrelle, King, Bishop, and Duke. You will be walking through the steps of Racine for sure, and just like the French poet, let yourself be inspired by the so many day and night charms of the town. 

Did you know?: The Romans built, from the source of the "Vallée de l'Eure" in Uzès, an aqueduc 49km long to route its water to Nîmes. The visible remains of this magnificent piece of man engineering is known as "Le Pont du Gard" (Classified Unesco in 1985).

If you can, Take the time to wander through the local market on place aux herbes on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and enjoy local food specialties and so many more goodies. Please note somewhere on your agenda another famous market: a rendez-vous must be taken for the truffle fair that takes place every 3rd week-end of January! 

Uzès is definitely a town where the French "art de vivre" meets a rich and monumental historical heritage.
