It is part of the Champagnole Nozeroy Jura community of municipalities.
Founded in the 13th century by Lord Jean 1 de Chalon, Nozeroy was home to a fortified castle, now in ruins. Nozeroy had its heyday in the Middle Ages, lasting 300 years under the dynasty of the House of Chalon-Arlay, Princes of Orange.It controlled the access routes to Switzerland and the salt industry.
