Über das Museum

Mentioned in the purchase contract of the court of Montemerano, which was sold by Ranieri dei Baschi to the Republic of Siena in 1382, the church of St. George was consecrated in its current structure in 1430, as recorded in an inscription set in the facade. The inside is decorated with frescoes from the 1400s and 1500s, brought back to life by modern restoration methods. Among them, we point out those depicting the stories of St. George and St. Ursula, several figures of saints, stories from the Holy Nativity and a Last Judgment, unfortunately partially erased by stucco work carried out in the 1700s. Among the many works to be found, a remarkable polyptych by Sano di Pietro, dated 1458, depicts the Madonna and Child alongside saints George, Peter, Lawrence, and Anthony of Padua. There are also a Saint Peter and a Lady of the Assumption made in wood, in the tradition of the Vecchietta school, in addition to an Annunciation Virgin, called Madonna della Gattaiola, all of them dating back to the 1400s.
