“Collectively we may find the answer to the problem of recidivism”
Mervin L. Akan’s “Presentation on Parole” is an excellent example of the Native Brotherhood’s advocacy work. Published in August 1973, the spirit of Akan’s sentiments were echoed almost half a century later in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Call to Action #37: “We call upon the federal government to provide more supports for Aboriginal programming in halfway houses and parole services.” Since publication of the TRC Report, Correctional Service Canada increased the number of Aboriginal Community Liaison Officers in urban areas and created an Indigenous Offender Reintegration Contribution Program.
