The “Parque Natural de la Península de Llevant” and the natural reserves of Cabo de Ferrutx and Cabo del Freu are located in the northeast of the island of Mallorca. In 2023 its area of protection has been extended to Son Bauló (Can Picafort), thus integrating the he “Parque Natural de la Península de Llevant” into our municipality.
The park is one of the most unique and interesting natural areas of the Balearic Islands due to the presence of a great diversity of habitats in a relatively small space, where a mountainous and coastal area with numerous botanical endemisms and an important ethnological heritage converge. There are also a variety of Mediterranean habitats such as holm oak groves, wild olive groves, pine groves, sea cliffs, dune systems and wetlands associated with torrents and the marine environment itself, which, combined with the extensive agricultural ecosystems created by traditional agricultural activity over the centuries, make up a good representation of the Mallorcan coast, the Balearic mountains and the maintenance of the island's traditional activities.
This site is located within a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) and is also a Site of Community Interest (LIC). Thanks to this fact, it is part of the European Union's Natura 2000 Network and is also a Natural Area of Special Interest (ANEI).
As it is such a large area (17,111.48 hectares), it can be accessed by bicycle, vehicle or public transport at various points. The most recommendable are: the “Finca Pública de Son Real”, which is connected through the GR221 itinerary; the "Canons" Public Estate, the "s'Alqueria Vella", "es Verger" and the “Finca Pública of Albarca"; and the “Finca Pública of Sa Duaia".
If you are fond of hiking and nature, the “Parque Natural de la Península de Llevant” is your choice!
