Borden House
Welcome to this leisurely walking tour of the historic North Quarter of Galveston Outlot 62 in the heart of midtown’s Kempner Park neighborhood. This compact block, once part of pioneer Gail Borden Jr.’s farmstead and cattle operation, showcases Galveston’s evolution from the Republic of Texas era through the post-1900 Storm residential boom.
The tour forms a simple rectangular loop: begin at the Borden House (3410 Bernardo de Galvez / Avenue P), head north on 35th Street to Avenue O, proceed east on Avenue O to 33rd Street, continue to the Menard House (1605 33rd Street), then return south on 35th Street back to Bernardo de Galvez, and finally walk west along Bernardo de Galvez to the starting point.
Total walking distance: approximately 0.6 miles (about 1,200 steps). With 14 stops for viewing and brief commentary, the tour takes 45–60 minutes at a relaxed pace. Wear comfortable shoes, use crosswalks at every intersection, and observe all historic homes strictly from the sidewalk—please respect our neighbors’ privacy and do not enter private property or gardens.
