· Richard Newsham received a patent for a manual fire pump.
· By the highest decree, Peter I established the Most Holy Synod, and abolished the post of Patriarch in the country and in the church.
· Johann Sebastain Bach sent a cycle of six musical pieces as a gift to the Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt. He received no answer, and the manuscript was accidentally discovered in the margrave's library only 100 years later and became known as the Brandenburg Concertos.
Saint Petersburg. Trinity Cathedral.
Peter 1 is 49 years old.
On October 22, the day of the celebration of the Peace treaty of Nystadt, Peter accepted the title of Emperor presented to him by the Senate and Synod. Changing the title of sovereign from Tsar to Emperor was not a consequence of Peter's immense vanity and majesty, but an overdue necessity of state. After the victory over Sweden and a sharp increase in the power of Russia, the real status of the country has changed: it was no longer a second-rate Muscovy, but joined the great powers of the world.
The Senate designed the ceremony of presenting Peter 1 with the imperial title as an address. The speech was delivered by Chancellor Gavriil Golovkin. Their appeal emphasized the tsar's incredible services to Russia and asked him to accept the new titles: "Father of the Fatherland," "Emperor of All the Russias," and "the Great".
Peter accepted the new titles and reminded them that "in hope of peace we should not be slack in military affairs... We must work for the common good and profit which God lays before our eyes, both within and without, which will make the people feel better".
The subjects enthusiastically welcomed Peter the Emperor: now Russia had become an Empire.
This is Ksenia Karpenko's painting "Peter I, the Emperor. The Trinity Cathedral Ceremony", created for the exhibition project "Thirty Paintings from the Life of Peter the Great - 2022".
