You are now looking at one of the most eccentric cars in the collection. It is the Swan Car, built to order in 1910 for a well-to-do Scotsman living in Calcutta, at the time capital of what was known as British India. The owner wanted to shock the local maharajas.
And shock them he did! During its very first outing the Swan Car caused panic and chaos in the streets of Calcutta. A monster resembling a swan, that moved by itself, emitted clouds of steam from its beak and whose eyes shone eerily. In addition to all that the car emitted a cacophony of sound from an eight-tone horn controlled out of sight from inside the car. And from the back of the car the swan even dropped white chalk on the street, to enhance the effect even more.
The police stepped in and straight away took the car off the road. The owner later sold the Swan Car to the maharaja of Nabha, who had a smaller version built for his children.
