Grass Valley, it wasn't always called that. It started out as Boston Ravine and then it became Centerville. Finally, in 1851 when we got a post office, it officially became Grass Valley.

My name is Rose Murphy, and I'm a biographer for the Grass Valley Museum. I am Lisa Redfern. I'm on the board of Sierra College Press. Lisa and I are both members of the Nevada County Historical Society and are also historical fiction authors.

Generally speaking, all of the self-guided walking tours we produce are good for all audiences. When we present material that parents may want to preview before youngsters listen, we'll give you a heads up. Like now.

We do read articles straight out of the paper. We don't agree with the sentiments today, but we think it's important to provide this information. So even though the information is skewed, it's important to know it because it tells a wider story that the white guys weren't the only ones here. They were the ones writing the newspaper. They were the ones telling the story. So of course they're going to tell it the way they wanted to tell it.  Sympathetic from their point of view, but we read it because that's what we have, and we present it just the way it is, and let you be the judge of how you want to perceive it.

There was violence. There was racial tension. There was robberies and murders and things like that. That does come out of the paper. So if you have a youngster, you might want to have them listen to something else.

We also have a (Wolf Creek) tour from Gary Griffith. He was a middle school teacher for Nevada City School of the Arts for many years, and his presentation would be just fine for young listeners.

Before starting on the Wolf Creek Trail. We recommend downloading the tour in a place that has good Wi-Fi or internet. As you begin this journey, we want to ensure an enjoyable experience for you and fellow walking tourists. Please remember to use earbuds for your audio tour and avoid using speakers.
