Neolithic Lampedusa. Cala Pisana.
The oldest traces of human presence in Lampedusa date back to the Medium Neolithic, V millennium B.C., and were discovered in 1971 during construction of modern road from town to Cala Pisana. Excavation works found an archaeological deposit of lithic industry and pottery fragments dating back to the Middle Neolithic period. Among identifiable sherds are flasks with conical rim, bowls and small cups with a convex bottom referring to Stentinello style: on well smoothed and polished surfaces decoration patterns are impressed or incised and sometimes filled with white limestone.
In association with decorated sherds were found bone tools like a spatula and two awls, and a lot of seashells, whose margin exactly coincides with wavy impressions on pottery: such a circumstance reveals that remains come from an area in the village intended to manufacturing ceramics.
