This tour was developed through a collaboration between Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition, Pasadena Department of Cultural Affairs, and Side Street Projects.
The City’s rotating public art program was launched in 2011 to enliven neighborhoods throughout the City with sculpture. Some of the artworks you will encounter were pre-existing and have been loaned to the City; others were newly commissioned as site-specific temporary artworks. This program aims to encourage the exchange of ideas and values about art, place, and creativity in our everyday lives.
Since the art in this tour is spread throughout the City of Pasadena, you can follow our recommended bike route and do it all in one day, or you can ride it in segments over several days. You can also pick any location you want to visit, in any sequence that you like. This tour relies on the GPS in your smart phone so that information and a recording about each art piece will be made available once you are close to each artwork’s location. You can also experience the tour from the comfort of your own home.

I don't live in Pasadena, so the route was helpful for me. Most streets were good for riding and a few were not so great, but many of the exhibits are on roadway medians or traffic islands. So I'm not sure if you can avoid a few bike unfriendly roads. The recordings of the artists were great and the app functioned well most of the time. Glitches might have been my phone. This was a fun way to go for a ride and see a free art show, especially since we can't go to museums right now.

I biked a portion of this route on a Saturday and was pleasantly surprised, challenged, and captivated by he art. The audio guides are well-produced and add fascinating context. Some of the pieces use the natural light as a core element so avoid overcast days and consider starting at dawn. The app was buggy and the official route includes very bike-unfriendly streets, so I would encourage ignoring it and making your own route -- the order of the exhibits does not matter.
