Outside the northern gate, just north of the Baptistery, a structure used for the production of textiles, or fullery (fullonicae), dating to the second century AD was unearthed. The complex consisted of three waterproof basins used during the preparation and dyeing of the textiles, and of a canal system for the dispersal of wastewater.
Tidbits: The recovery of bone artefacts lead to the belief that a needle and pin workshop was located nearby. The area is therefore interpreted as a hub for the production of textiles.
Excavations have brought to light many objects made of ceramic, glass and metal, and coins, which can be dated between the first and fifth century AD.
MEDICI RICCARDI PALACE
Traces of the ancient city have surfaced from the excavations conducted by the Province of Florence at the Medici Riccardi Palace. The natural banks of the Mugnone Creek, which flowed in the vicinity of the current Palace when Florentia was founded, were recognized in its cellars. The Romans had diverted the creek to reclaim the area and build a villa, among whose remains medical implements were recovered: a statuette used to study human anatomy, implements for games and personal hygiene, remains of the floors and wall frescoes.
