Jeff Koons, Ushering in Banality
Jeff Koons’ fun central message is “that the banality of modern life is, after all, the life we have, and that we should make the most of it.”
Ushering in Banality (vertaling: ‘de banaliteit binnenhalen’) looks like it has been brought in straight from Grandma’s shelf, just in a bigger proportion.
When the museum bought this piece in 1989 for 250.000 gulden, society was shocked. Such a huge amount of money for a kitch sculpture? And even more shocking was the fact that the piece wasn’t even made by the artist himself. With the size and its title “Ushering in banality”, the artist wanted to create a discussion about art and commercial products, in between art and kitsch.
By just blowing up an existing piece and changing almost nothing, Koons created a new art direction, which he thought the mainstream public might find difficult to understand, but his idea was to create art which pleases the public, to actually give them what they really want. What about you? Do you want this?
