Zeeland is a rural society, an agricultural province that has made sun, sea and beach its trademark. Who thinks of steam engines, smoking factory chimneys or underground naphtha pipes? Who knows what products are being developed in Zeeland's industry today?
Who realizes that Zeeland is the knowledge center of industries that sell their products all over the world? Who knows, for example, that the glass on the façade of the Rotterdam World Trade Center and the Russian Parliament in Moscow comes from Sas van Gent? That Zeeland is at the heart of developments in bio-energy? And that the orange tompouce on Kings Day is the legacy of a factory in Zierikzee?
Like the rest of the Netherlands and Europe, Zeeland went through a process of industrialization in and after the nineteenth century.
This development started after the United Kingdom of the Netherlands came to an end in 1830. At that time, Belgium was a modern industrialized country with among others, cotton and metal industries; the Netherlands was mainly focused on agriculture, small industry and trade. After the separation from Belgium, heavy industry developed in the Netherlands, especially initiated by Walloon investors, along the modernized canal from Ghent to Terneuzen, which was completed in 1827.
It is therefore logical that the Industrial Museum Zeeland is located in Sas van Gent, the first serious industrial town in the Netherlands.

Prachtig museum: je komt ogen tekort. De verhalen van de medewerkers zijn heel boeiend en leuk om te horen. We kwamen tijd te kort om alles te zien en ervaren helaas. Daarom komen we zeker nog een keertje terug!
